While VITAL CONNECTION began as a personal passion in the heart of Brian Beadnell to help disadvantaged people, as it grew to be a major project it easily slotted into the portfolio of ADRA Australia’s national program. Currently, ADRA Australia has over 120 community projects spread over all states and territories.

Major projects include Women’s Refuges, Youth Resilience Projects, Community Centres offering a diversity of supports initiatives, Emergency Relief Centres, Community Meals programs (like VITAL CONNECTION), Counselling Services, and Indigenous Child & Youth Resilience projects.

There is also a suite of smaller “LCPs” or Local Community Projects that are smaller in budget, need less numbers of volunteers to function and generally serve a smaller catchment area. There are currently FIVE areas of project focus including:

  1. Emergency Relief: distributed as Community Meals - under the ADRA Café umbrella, or asa Grocery Parcels under the Community Pantry umbrella.
  2. Settle Assist: Programs to assist immigrants / refugees in there settling in process. Currently provided as assistance with gaining a driver's license and survival English lessons.
  3. Seniors Connect - a program for isolated or at-risk seniors through a four-focused community engagement process.
  4. Youth Resilience - working with adolescents in the community to develop their resilience through basic engagement and mentoring using a portfolio of resources.
  5. Community Gardens - empowering people to grow gardens, thus learn key skills to build and maintain a sustainable community garden, with produce being distributed to local disadvantaged people and families.

ADRA - the Adventist Development and Relief Agency is the official humanitarian heart of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, committed to improve the lives of people in our world and currently with a presence in 126 countries around the world. ADRA Australia is the regional branch of the worldwide agency.

What’s good to know is – no one is left out of ADRA’s reach. ADRA is committed to assisting all people - regardless of their ethnicity, their race or their religious, political or gender affiliation. We believe Christ’s ministry of compassion should extend to everyone and anyone who is in need.
